University of Alabama Studio

Tuscaloosa, Alabama

This new video-production facility for the University of Alabama was the result of a collaborative effort with both client and architect spanning over two years. SH Acoustics was engaged early in the planning and budgeting process and provided pre-design and broadcast-infrastructure consulting services involving acoustic and noise-control design.

The project involved building two new webcast studios for the College of Continuing Studies e-learning initiative but was part of a larger 100,000-square-foot renovation of the existing historic University Hall campus building, which will be the new home for the college.

One of the biggest design challenges was providing a flexible studio with multiple presentation configurations that could easily be operated by skilled and non-skilled broadcast staff. Our solution included easily movable scenery, roll-down graphic backdrops, and wall-mounted push-button stations for different lighting positions.

An additional project challenge was the existing building site. Once used as a hospital, the building was demolished down to the concrete structure and re-built. Our team coordinated with the project architect and engineering team regarding placement of base building systems (HVAC, electrical, and acoustics) to support the new studios.
