While the Statue of Liberty remains New York’s most iconic monument, the museum housed in its base had long proved inadequate for the thousands who visit each day. SHA was brought into this prestigious project to ensure that all aspects of immersive sound in the theaters and exhibits were impactful yet highly controlled.
We worked with the ESI Design exhibit team as well as key producers, including Disney+Donna Lawrence Productions (for the three main immersive theaters) and Jeremy Bloom Sound Design (soundscapes and other audio content throughout exhibits) to properly establish the acoustic environments, mitigate noise factors that would impede the effectiveness of sound delivery, and design and calibrate the audio systems. The latter included custom applications of “activated sound,” which transform exhibit walls and other objects into virtual loudspeakers to provide a fully enveloping experience. Ensuring that the delivery and durability of these sonic experiences stood up to the high annual visitation of over four million people was one of the prime objectives in all choices of technology and acoustic finishes.
